Amateur Radio (HAM):
Amateur radio has more robust capabilities and allows for local communications as well as world wide communications. This is an ideal method to communicate in an emergency when phone, cellular and other modes of communications are disrupted. Amateur radio requires a license and you must pass a written test. You are no longer required to learn the Morse code. There are 3 license levels, in order to be involved in emergency services, you should work towards at least the general license class.
